When I tick one of the themes, it gets properly changed and displayed but I am unable to change the settings. I only came across your question while doing a little research after deciding to dig into this and find a proper fix. When I go to "Options>Customize Emacs>Custom Themes" both themes are displayed. This has bugged me for years, and I worked around it by using an old style 'color-theme'.
